Escape to the country: Vineyards of Sussex
Ok, I know, I know- I’m ‘London Hospitality Girl’. But I have a dirty secret…
The truth is, I actually live in Sussex- and I love it! Being in the countryside AND only 45 minutes from London is dreamy…especially in the summer heat.
But fear not: if you’re a fan of the good things in life (like me), and you need some R&R out of the big smoke, here’s a few of my favourite Sussex spots. And the best bit? They’re all less than 2 hours from London.
Artelium Vineyard, Hassocks
Nestled into the stunning South Downs, Artelium is a contemporary wine estate specialising in bubbles.
Enjoy a leisurely wander around the outside of the vineyard (perfect for a dog walk), and finish off your day with a charcuterie or cheese board and a bottle of something cold as you take in the panoramic views. Glorious.
From London (1hr 52m)
London Victoria or London Bridge to Plumpton and then a 30 minute walk across the downs, or a short taxi ride from Hassocks train station.
Ridgeview wine estate, Ditchling
One of the OG’s when it comes to the English wine revolution, you might be surprised at how close Ridgeview actually is.
Their al fresco restaurant, ‘The Rows & Vines’, has been widely acclaimed for fabulous local produce in a fine dining setting- and the views aren’t bad either.
Check their website for regular events, including their annual ‘Ridgefest’ (TBC for 2025)
From London (1hr 35m)
London Victoria/London Bridge to Burgess Hill, and a 6 minute taxi ride from there.
Bluebell Vineyard, Uckfield
Bluebell Vineyard might not be as well known as some of their larger counterparts, but they fully deserve a mention- not least for their astounding ‘Hindleap Classic Cuvée’ (one of my favourites).
Get into the detail with a tour and a tasting, or take yourself off on one of three walking trails (dogs on leads welcome).
From London (1hr 20)
London Victoria/London Bridge to Haywards Heath, and a 20 minute taxi ride from there.
Albourne Estate, Albourn
One for the foodies, Albourne Estate has been making waves on the local scene with their ‘Friday Supper Club’. Reserve a table and enjoy food from a selection of local vendors, with everything from Greek Souvlaki to fine dining takeovers from local chefs
Booking is essential, so get in there early to avoid dissapointment and spend a fabulous evening amongst the vines with some of the best food & wine Sussex has to offer.
